Jet ski service

Mobile jet ski service — on the trailer, at your place.

A jet ski gets used hard for three months and sits for nine, which is exactly the pattern that kills them. Service intervals, tune-ups, fluids, the fuel system and the battery, done on the trailer in your driveway instead of losing the ski to a service department for a fortnight in the middle of summer.

Detail

Oil, plugs, fuel systems, batteries and full service intervals on personal watercraft.

What a service interval on a ski covers

Engine oil and filter on a four-stroke, spark plugs, the fuel filter and the fuel system, battery and charging, greasing where the manual asks for it, and a look through the pump area and the wear ring for what the ski has swallowed. Two-strokes want their own attention on oil and plugs. Every one of those is a scheduled item and every one of them is skipped by somebody every season.

Salt water is the whole story here

Sabine Lake and the Gulf are salt, and a ski that comes out of salt and goes onto the trailer without a flush is corroding before it is dry. Flushing is part of the job here. So is looking at what salt has already found — connectors, clamps, the exhaust, and anything steel that somebody assumed was stainless.

The nine months it spends sitting

Stale fuel is the reason most skis do not start in May. Pump fuel with ethanol in it separates and gums up what it sits in, batteries go flat and then go dead, and a machine put away wet in September comes out corroded in the spring. Nearly all of that is prevented by an hour in November — see jet ski winterizing, which is the cheapest thing on any of these pages.

On the trailer, in the driveway

That is where this work happens: the ski on its trailer, at your house, with the truck and the tools brought to it. Oil changes, winterizing and the rest of the service work are all house calls. Hull work is the one thing we do not take on — a cracked or holed hull is a fibreglass job and you will be told that rather than have somebody have a go at it.

The trailer is a trailer

While we are standing there — the thing the ski is sitting on runs tires with a load rating and a date code, and small trailer tires age out long before they wear out. That is our day job. See truck & trailer tires, which covers everything from a lowboy down to the one behind your truck right now.

Questions

Jet ski service — questions

Do you work on the ski at my house?

Yes — on the trailer, in the driveway. Nothing has to be dropped off and nothing sits in a queue behind twenty other skis in July.

It has not run since last summer. Where do you start?

Fuel and battery, almost every time. Fuel that has sat through a winter is the usual culprit, with a dead battery second. Both are service work rather than a repair, which is a much better invoice than it feels like when it will not start.

Do you flush it after salt water?

Flushing is part of the job here. Salt that is left in a ski does its damage quietly and the bill for it arrives years later, which is why it is not treated as an optional extra.

Where does the work happen?

At your place, on the trailer. Oil changes, servicing and winterizing are all done there and none of it needs the ski in the water or dropped off anywhere.

Do you do hull repair?

No. Hull damage is fibreglass work and not something we take on. If we find it you will hear exactly what it is, which is more than a lot of people get.

Which makes do you work on?

All makes of personal watercraft. What matters more than the badge is whether it has been in salt and how long it has been sitting.

What does a ski service cost?

Standard call-out fee, and whether after-hours differs
