Jet ski winterizing

Jet ski winterizing — booked ahead, done in your driveway.

It does not freeze here often, which is exactly why it costs people money when it does. Winterizing is an hour of work in November that decides whether the ski starts in April or goes to a dealer with a cracked something. We come to the house and do it on the trailer, and it is the one job on this site you can book weeks ahead.

Detail

Fuel, water and battery dealt with before the cold, at the house, on the trailer.

What winterizing is actually protecting you from

Three things, and they are all cheap until they are not. Water left in the machine, which is the one that cracks things on the night it finally does freeze on this coast. Fuel left to sit, which separates and gums up over a winter and is the reason most skis will not start in the spring. And a battery left flat from September, which will not come back. None of the three announce themselves until the first hot Saturday of the year.

What a winterize covers

Fresh water flushed through and the water got out of where it sits. Fuel stabilised so it survives the months in the tank. The engine fogged so the internals are not sitting bare through a damp winter. Oil and filter if it is due — most people have it done at the same visit and save a second one. Battery off, or on a tender, and the grease points seen to. Then it gets covered and left in a way that does not gather water.

Book it before the cold, not after it

The freeze that matters here is the one nobody planned for. This coast goes years without a hard one and then gets a week that shuts the state down, and the skis that come out of it broken are the ones that had water in them. Booking in October or November costs the same as booking in December and is a completely different amount of risk.

While we are there

It is the natural moment to have the service done — oil and filter, plugs, the fuel filter — because the ski is already being gone through and it is one visit instead of two. See jet ski service for what a full service interval covers.

Spring, and the other half of the job

A ski that was winterized properly wants very little in April: battery back in, fuel checked, a look over it and out it goes. A ski that was not is the one on the trailer at the ramp with everybody watching. We do the spring end too, and it is a much shorter visit when we did the autumn one.

More than one ski

Two skis on a double trailer, or a camp with several, get done in the same visit — which is one call-out rather than several and is worth mentioning when you book.

Hull work is not part of this

We do not take on hull repair. If a winterize turns up a crack or damage in the hull, you get told what it is and what it will take, and it goes to somebody who does fibreglass. Saying so up front is cheaper for everybody than finding out at the ramp.

Questions

Jet ski winterizing — questions

When should I have it winterized?

October or November, before the first cold snap gets forecast. It costs the same in October as it does the week everybody panics, and by then the calendar is full.

Do you come to the house for it?

Yes — on the trailer, in the driveway. Nothing gets dropped off and nothing sits in a queue somewhere for a fortnight.

Does it really freeze enough here to matter?

Not most years, and that is the trap. The hard freezes this coast does get arrive every few years, catch everybody, and the skis that get hurt are the ones with water still in them. It is insurance, priced like an hour of labour.

Can you do the service at the same time?

That is the usual way — oil and filter, plugs and the fuel side done while it is being gone through anyway, which saves a second visit.

Do you do more than one at a time?

Yes, and it is cheaper per ski that way. Tell us how many when you book.

Do you do hull repair if you find damage?

No. Hull work is not something we take on. You will be told exactly what we found and roughly what it means, and it goes to somebody who does fibreglass.

What does winterizing cost?

Standard call-out fee, and whether after-hours differs It is quoted per ski, and quoted before we come out rather than after.
